Easy Dutch Apple Pie

There’s nothing like the smell of apple pie baking in your oven, period. It may be 85 degrees, still, yes still in November, but I’m trying my hardest to pretend like it’s Fall! In honor of my good friend’s birthday I told him I would bake him anything he wanted, and a Dutch Apple Pie, with vanilla bean ice cream of course, is what the birthday boy ordered!

I had recently received a giant box of my Farm Fresh To You goodies and had a whole pile of apples on my hand, so his request was perfect timing. Now I had a few other things on my to do list so I opted for an easy version; i.e. I used a store bought frozen pie crust, blasphemy, I know! But in the end this pie was super easy, the apples sweet and perfectly crisp which paired nicely with the buttery and sugary crumble on top, simply delish! And that smell, well pure Heaven!

Start by heating your oven to 375 degrees and pealing your apples.

I used a mixture of Gala and Golden Delicious, but in my opinion any apple will do. You just need to adjust your sugar mixture to account for tart or sweet apple variety. After your apples are peeled, cored and sliced, set them aside in a strainer over a bowl. Mix in 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. (Skip this if you are using a very tart apple). Let the lemon drain into the bowl. Meanwhile stir together 1/2 cup white sugar, 1/4 cup flour, and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon. Discard the lemon juice from the bowl and add the apples with the sugar/flour mixture and mix thoroughly.

Pour into your store bought frozen pie crust and use your fingers to pat down and arrange the apples so that they all fit snuggly.

To make the crumble, melt 1/2 a cup of butter in the microwave, add 1/2 cup of flour, 1/2 cup of sugar, and 1/2 cup of brown sugar until your mixture forms small beads. Use your fingers to top the pie with the crumble, be generous and press down so the delicious goodness doesn’t fall off!

Place the pie on a cookie sheet, place in the middle of your pre-heated oven, and bake for 50 minutes.
